There are two mechanisms that cause erosion:

First, soil particles become detached and start to move due to the impact caused by raindrops. This same type of soil particle movement occurs in arid areas where strong winds are prevalent.

Secondly, soil particles will become detached and start to move down the slope because of surface runoff on the slope

In order to provide the best erosion control, a product must be able to decrease the movement of the soil particles by decreasing the impact of these two mechanisms..
